A dynamic visual identity centered around a texture in motion. An experimental video-based poster & event communications. The thematic landscape of the festival was in the deep / on the surface. The curators ask: What kinds of things are present and in motion? Already identifiable? What kinds of things are just taking shape? What is surfacing in different contexts? Or what kinds of things are under the surface or in the depths? How can working and doing be many things at once – deep, pleasurable, light, subversive? Playful, feminist and communal? Or utopian?

A dynamic visual identity centered around a texture in motion.

The festival

"UrbanApa x Ateneum brought urban contemporary art to a museum context, and for four days, a group of diverse artists – all professionals in performance art, music, and visual arts – took over the Ateneum museum to create surprising, interdisciplinary and playful works. The 2023 program has been curated by Emmi Venna and Sonya Lindfors.

Or utopian?"

Process:

The idea is a multi-media collage that draws attention to interaction of opposing elements like light & dark or surface & depth. The collage is built using layers of different visual media like illustration, photography, typography and soapy-oily video textures.

The focus of the collage is on the moving image, which is made from distorted footage of liquids of varying viscosities. The oily liquids were recorded mixing with each other.

Photography setup to record textures - a mini glass pool of liquids lit from the bottom with diffused yellow light
Photography setup to record textures - a mini glass pool of liquids lit from the top with stark white light

The differences in viscosity and the tendency of the oils to create little clusters generate disturbances and bubbly movements on the surface.

The final clip was selected based on the soapy-oily bubbles that were best at bubbling in a manner which was most resonant with the theme.
